How to decorate a small living room

We all love space, personal or structural; but not all of us can afford it.

Most city-dwellers know the challenge of working with a small and compact living room all too well.

But here’s the good news – size truly does not matter when it comes to your living room.

From choosing the right colour scheme to making sure you have enough storage, we’ve put together a list of small living room decorating ideas below:

Sofa.. so good.

You know that six-seater sofa that looks great on the catalogue? Stay away. Large sofas can take almost all of the space, leaving you with limited flexibility and less room for home improvement.

A 1.5 seater that is comfortable and stylish would do the trick. Better yet, you can ditch the couch and opt for a modern settee or wing chairs that would instantly make your living room look and feel chicer.

Let the light in

When you live or work in a small space, natural light is your best friend let it in by using sheer curtains. Even if you’re working with one to no windows, make sure the living area is not devoid of sufficient lighting.

Create a warm and inviting atmosphere with sconces, table and floor lamps. Hanging pendant lights will make a statement, or you may choose to have sleek frames for added sophistication.

Attention. Please!

A cool way to spice up a small living room is to draw attention to a statement piece; it could be a brick wall, a swanky bookcase, a colourful rug.. or even a bold ceramic dog statue ( any Friends fans? ).

If you want to play it safe, you can always go for decorative wall frames, antiques or vibrant and eccentric throw pillows on your sofa. Really, what can’t a good throw pillow or two solve?

But what about the telly?

Remember what we discussed about letting the light in? Yes, make sure that the TV ‘isn’t blocking window light. If it’s possible, always mount the TV on the wall and tuck away the ugly wires for a clean look.

If you want to get savvy with storage, find a cabinet you can multi-purpose as a TV stand and a storage unit. You can also camouflage your TV by creating an art wall – how genius!
